What happens at the limit
Trace limit reached: New traces return 429 TRACE_LIMIT_REACHED. Your existing data, dashboard, alerts, and conversations remain accessible. Upgrade your tier or wait for the monthly reset.
Gateway limit reached: New gateway requests return 429 GATEWAY_LIMIT_REACHED. Purchase a gateway add-on ($29/mo for 5,000 requests) or wait for reset.
Alert rule limit reached: Cannot create new rules. Purchase an alert add-on ($15/mo per rule) or upgrade your tier.
Monthly reset
Trace and gateway counters reset on a rolling 30-day period from when Observe was enabled — not on a fixed calendar date. The reset happens automatically on the next request after the period expires.
Important: Counters never reset on tier change, upgrade, or downgrade. Only the limit changes — the counter keeps counting from where it was.
BYOK and LLM costs
When using the Guard Gateway with BYOK (Bring Your Own Key), LLM costs are billed to your provider account, not Scrimmage. The gateway add-on ($29/mo) covers only the guardrail service — you pay your LLM provider separately at their rates.
Without BYOK, requests use Scrimmage's key (limited to the free tier volume of 500 requests/month).
